The first time I heard about a vision board was about ten years ago. I loved the idea—colorful cutouts pasted on a large board with pictures ranging from fashion goals to financial goals, weight loss goals and many more. For a long time, I preferred journaling and keeping my ideas written in a closed book that I could return to any day I wanted. Journaling did wonders for me! I would constantly write my thoughts and aspirations down in a book and would regularly return to read them.

Late last year, a girlfriend of mine invited me to a Vision Board Party. I was excited and decided to give it a try. Sure, I had written my 2019 goals and aspirations in my journal, so I thought, attending a vision board party couldn’t hurt. Free food and wine? Sign me up please!

The party was fun! Lots of fun I tell you. We had magazines, glues, pens, markers, scissors, different sizes of boards and frames, food, drinks, music, etc. Then we started cutting away at magazines, picking out words and pictures that spoke to our goals and visions for the year 2019 and beyond. It was such an eye-opening and exciting experience for me.

Writing down my goals in my journal was great but having a vision board for my goals and aspirations was even greater! The finished product was amazing! I was so proud of myself for creating a masterpiece that I get to hang up and see every single day! My vision board hangs in my bedroom, center of it all. Every single day I wake up, my vision and goals are staring right back at me. I have no more excuses.

This reminds me of the Bible passage, Habakkuk 2:2 that says, “Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run with it, who reads it.” This passage couldn’t be more applicable to having a vision board.

I’ve seen some questionable vision boards but then again, to each his/her own.

But what I’ve found helpful are the steps below:

  • Set aside time to think about what you want to accomplish in the year or years to come
  • Find a relaxed environment either alone with a group of friends (no more than 10 to avoid too much distractions)
  • Music and food are a must…magazines too!
  • Flip through magazines to search for words that speak to your vision/goals/aspirations, cut out and glue them to the board.
  • Finally, display your vision board somewhere prominent where you’ll see it every single day.

My vision board is such a hit in my family, even my children are fully aware of mommy’s goals and they remind me Every. Single. Day! And get this, my hubby is inspired to create something more concrete for himself too. And no! he’s not creating a vision board.

Dear moms…(and dads?), this year 2019, I hope you are inspired to write the vision; make it plain on tablets (or boards), so he/she may run with it, who reads it.
